For more than 80 years, Senhor João has lived with his hands in the soil — cultivating food, nurturing the land, and sharing his knowledge with anyone willing to learn. His small vegetable garden has fed generations and inspired a culture of self-reliance, respect for nature, and community care.

At Ecosustain, we honour his legacy by transforming this humble garden into a community project where families can learn to grow their own food, reconnect with the land, and build resilience together. What began as one man’s lifelong passion is becoming a shared movement for food security and sustainable living.

These are the fruits of quiet work and patient hands — fresh vegetables grown in our small family garden, now thriving with colour and life. Each harvest reminds us of what the Cerrado can offer when we respect its rhythms and care for its soil. This gallery celebrates not just food, but possibility: the idea that healthy, local produce can nourish families, strengthen communities, and inspire sustainable habits for generations to come.

The Vegetable Garden 2: The Results 

Over the years, many of our project ideas were born and tested at the small sítio of Dona Valdivina and Senhor João — a humble piece of land that has quietly hosted our dreams. This gallery documents the creation of the communal area: bricks lifted by neighbours, wood shaped by calloused hands, and shared effort turning space into possibility. What began as a simple structure has become a symbol of community strength, resilience, and the collaborative spirit that guides all of Ecosustain’s work.

The Dream in the Making

This gallery shows the completed area at the sítio of Mrs. Valdivina and Mr. João — a space carefully built over time to support small gatherings and day-to-day activities on the property. While it remains a family space, it has served as the backdrop for many of our early project ideas, hands-on experiments, and learning experiences. Its completion reflects dedication, resourcefulness, and the spirit of building something meaningful with what we have. It is also, thanks to the generosity of the couple, where we will continue our work in our projects in family oriented agriculture and sustainable farming ideas. 

The Sítio Today

This gallery highlights the urban vegetable garden created by Dr. Marcos, a lawyer who kindly supports us with legal matters. Inspired by the techniques learned from Mr. João’s traditional farming methods, he transformed a space in his own home into a productive garden. It’s a simple but powerful example of how shared knowledge grows roots beyond the countryside—showing that sustainable practices can flourish anywhere, from rural sítios to city backyards.

The effects

The Cerrado is home to an extraordinary variety of native fruits — rich in flavor, aroma, colour, and history.  Pequi, buriti, mangaba, cagaita, araticum, murici, baru, guabiroba, jenipapo and umbu, abacá (babaçu), bacuri, cajá, coquinho-azedo, cumaru, jabuticaba, jatobá and licuri.  The list goes on. Beyond being delicious on their own, they can be transformed into artisanal liqueurs, refreshing juices, and unforgettable ice creams. In partnership with the Universidade Estadual de Goiás and Professor Paracy, we had the privilege of participating in a tasting session that revealed just how unique and valuable these fruits truly are. Across Goiás, visionary entrepreneurs have already turned this natural wealth into thriving businesses — like Frutos do Cerrado, now a multi-million real enterprise with franchises nationwide. With the right training and investment, these fruits can generate income, create jobs, and offer sustainable opportunities deeply rooted in local culture and biodiversity.
